Patchouli is a fast-growing perennial herb best known for it's earthy and calming fragrance. The leaves are non-edible, however simply rub, steam, or dry fresh leaves to release the essential oils. Patchouli originated in Southeast Asia, namely Malaysia, but is loved and cultivated throughout the world for it's richly aromatic foliage. It grows in the form of a small bush and is from the lavender, mint, and oregano family of plants; Lamiaceae.
The essential oils extracted from Patchouli's leaves and flowers are popularly used is perfumes, soaps, and aromatherapy, however they also contain anti-bacterial properties. Patchouli is an antiseptic and makes a great insect repellent.
